The Download Series release you NEED to get is definately #6 which is 3/17/68 Carousel Ballroom!

Crystal clear with a superb performance of New Potato Caboose as well as some typical early '68 intensity in the form of a very nice Born Cross Eyed> Cryptical> Other One> Cryptical and a China Cat> Eleven> Caution.

If you dont't already have #6 get it!

I second that emotion. I would also add Vol.12, 4-17-69 .
However, you can't go to dead.net to buy it. itunes has Vol. 6 for 9.99 and Vol. 12 for 19.99 ! I do not know who else is selling it.

In complete agreement with you on the value of this download. Would have preferred FLAC but could only find it in mp3 format (9.99 from amazon)

From deaddisc: “Turn On Your Lovelight is the last song from set 1 of the 3/17/68 show. The majority of the songs from set 1 could not be salvaged due to technical problems that were partly due to "sound experiments" conducted on the master tapes during the production of Anthem Of The Sun. That's It For The Other One through to Feedback is the complete second set.”

Surely glad to have this – and wouldn’t it be fine if we could hear the rest of the first set! It is hard not to be greedy in this digital day and age, but having also just added 2/14/68 and its’ bonus disc to my collection, I guess I can’t complain.

And Cliff, you mention the Born Crossed-Eyed – I assume that this was a mistake as it isn't in the download and apparently from the lost first set?

(Edit: FLAC files are available from livedownloads)

NO BCE on DL #6?

I'm Sailfishing down in FLA, dont have my notebooks and I'm participating via Blackberry (hence my truncated and in this case erroneous contribution). I do remember the NPC on DL #6 as being one of the top three or so all-time best performances of the song. I believe I also have a poor quality recording of 3/17/68 but don't recall if it includes BCE or not...

The Dead must also have liked the New Potato from 3/17, as they used part of it on Anthem.

I'd be shocked if you had an older low-quality copy of this show, as I believe it didn't circulate in any form before the Download Series.

There's no BCE in what we have, but deadlists notes: "DeadBase XI lists Dark Star > Born Cross-Eyed as also a part of this show, which does not circulate." Now THAT'S an unexpected segue!

I am still a relatively new student of 1968, delightfully soaking up what recordings and information I can find and trying to piece together the puzzles. It is quite a rewarding, if not at times confusing enterprise, and I am indebted to you (and our other resident champions of the year) for your discerning and persuasive discussions. I hope to be able to add more myself one day soon – I have lots of questions, but will continue researching and work on a more comprehensive post in the near future.

Hope the fishing is good and you are enjoying the warmer weather down there!
